On June 18, 2009 the Alamo Chapter of Safari Club had it's annual Africa Night, this year not only did they provide a dinner for their guests but they also had a wine tasting with fine wines from Africa donated by Boerne Wine Sellers, in Boerne Texas. The event started at 6:30pm with dinner served at 7:30pm. Immediately following dinner the guests were entertained by speaker Tommy Morrison of Sporting International in Channelview, Texas.
Tommy made his first safari to Africa in 1976 where he fell in love with the adventure, the hunting and the camaraderie around an African campfire. Since then, he has traveled to Africa many times not only to hunt but to review and critique African outfitters, he represents. With over 20 years experience as a hunting consultant and owner of Sporting International, he specializes in African Safaris. He has hunted, fished and photographed in more than 15 foreign countries and throughout Alaska, Canada and Western United States.
He personally has obtained over 50 species of African animals. The Big Five of Africa, 3 of the 4 Grand Slam of North America Wild Sheep, and over 20 of the 28 species of North America Big Game. His goal in hunting has never been to see how many different species he could shoot but to enjoy the sport of hunting and the experiences it brings while hunting selective species in the areas that they occur.
He spoke on many key points from traveling with guns and ammo in today's world to knowing what type of currency to carry. It was a very enjoyable evening made complete by him.
Door prizes were awarded to several attendants and the Best Dressed African Attire went to Sandra Martin for the ladies and Bert Kleinberger for the guys.
We would like to offer special thanks to the Holiday Inn for the wonderful accommodations and also for a great meal. Boerne Wine Sellers for some outstanding wine. Tommy Morrison and Sporting International for some valuable information and Dr. Pat Masters for the use of the projector screen. And special thanks to those members that attended and made this night an extraordinary night. And last but certainly not least a huge thanks to Lana Craigo for coordinating this awesome event.
And in the words of our great speaker Tommy Morrison, shoot straight and stay down wind.
